Race report: Aztec Invitational 5k

I ran a 5k cross country race (the Aztec Invitational) in Balboa Park this morning. I thought I'd run under 27 minutes because I'm down to 176 pounds now, but I ran 28:04.  That's 9:02 pace and I'd hoped to run 8:30 pace.  My official excuse is that I'm worn out from all the 7-8 mile hikes that Terry and I have been doing on my non-running days. Oh well, I got a good workout, a T-shirt, and some Gatorade.

Clearly good racing is about magical/wishful thinking. Your problem (if it is a problem) is that you're not "hoping" enough. So, for example, if you hope to run 8:30 and end up running 9:00 instead you've just calibrated your actual performance vis a vis your hopes (approximately 30 sec/mile).

So in order to run faster you just need to hope BIGGER/FASTER. I suggest you hope to run 3:30 per mile pace and while you'll be disappointed in only run 4:00 per mile pace, at least it'll be a different kind of disappointment.
